The former Salmonella Dub frontman, Tiki Taane is one of Aotearoa New Zealand’s most progressive and respected artists.
Contrasting Taane’s trademark bass-heavy production with traditional Maori instrumentation, Tiki challenges hisaudience to consider the contradictions of contemporary society. Paying homage to his Maori ancestry the lead single on his latest album, Past, Present, Future ,Tangaro,a features the powerful haka and vocals of Taane’s father Uekaha Taanetinorau, while acknowledging his own position as a young Maori male in contemporary New Zealand through his unmistakable future-dub fusion.
Past, Present, Future was released in New Zealand in October 2007 and has been in the Top 40 Albums charts ever since. Each of the first three singles, ‘Tangaroa’, ‘Now This Is It’ and ‘Our Favourite Target’ garnered more support from local media with the culmination coming with the fourth single, the beautiful acoustic track ‘Always On My Mind’. This became a # 1 smash hit, being the # 1 single for 2 weeks and is still, 9 weeks later, in the Top 10. It was also the # 1 most played song at radio and the first ever single in New Zealand to achieve platinum sales via a digital release only.
Past, Present, Future was also the winner of Best Aotearoa Roots Album at the 2008 Vodafone New Zealand Music Awards, while Tiki Taane also gathered another 5 nominations at the awards: Best Album, Best Single, Best Breakthrough Artist, Best Maori Album and Best Male Solo Artist. |
