Artist: Veto Release: ‘Crushing Digits’ Album Label: themusicconnection / Inertia
It’s been a huge couple of years for Danish progressive rock/ dance outfit Veto. They’ve shot to popularity across Europe, received rave reviews, topped chart after chart, been nominated for and won awards and become a favorite on the European festival circuit. Call their album ‘Crushing Digits’ progressive rock or indie pop if you will. We call it “the biggest thing to come out of Denmark since Hans Christian Andersen”. Regardless of whatever label you choose to give it –just play it loud.
Consisting of Troels Abrahamsen (vocals/synth), David Krogh Andersen (guitar), Mark Lee (guitar/synth), Jens Skov Thomsen (bass guitar/vocals) and Mads Hasager (drums), Veto has worked hard to get where they are – not taking notice of the trends and fads around them. rather choosing to play their music has certainly paid off.
They were recognised for their contribution with a ‘Band of the Year’ Danish Music Award, a P3 Gold Award, and ‘Readers Choice Album of the Year’ by Sound Venue magazine. They were also voted ‘#1 Band’ and ‘#1 album’ of 2006 in Denmark’s biggest music magazine GAFFA. In 2007 they headlined at The Green Concerts, Scandinavia’s biggest festival tour. It doesn’t end there though. Last year lead singer Troels Abrahamsen won ‘Producer Of The Year’ at the highly regarded Steppeulv Awards.
In line with the increased attention, they’ve been billed alongside the likes of Smashing Pumpkins and The Killers, with their dynamic and high energy live show winning them audiences at the biggest European festivals. 20,000 punters at Roskilde going mental for them can’t be wrong!
‘Crushing Digits’ is the band’s second album. Entering the Danish music charts at number two, the single ‘Built to Fail’ received heavy airplay on radio right across Denmark. With sounds not unlike The Klaxons, Troels Abrahamsen’s vocals are a modern day version of The Cure’s Robert Smith crossed with NIN’s Trent Reznor.
The second single from the album, ‘Blackout’ is an emotional piece with a throbbing bassline reminiscent of Digitalism. Merging traditional rock guitar and drum elements with an electronic ethos Veto straddle rock, pop, indi and dance with one daring strike. If you like pulsing electronic music with splashes of Radiohead and Depeche Mode, you’ll love this!
Europe has fallen in love with these Danes and it’s not hard to see why. They’ve taken Europe by storm, now its Australia’s to get excited.
