Andy (middle), Einstein (right)
Tell us about the first time you were really inspired by music?
Einstein: seeing ‘cars’ performed by Gary Newman on ‘Saturday Night Live’ in 1979
Andy: when I heard the opening theme from ‘Star Wars’ as a 4/5 year-old. My brother and i would run around the house wearing bathrobes and swinging wiffle-ball bats to the music
What do you consider to be your greatest skill?
Einstein: the patience to collect and listen to countless records looking for a good sample.
Andy: arranging music. I'm pretty good at structuring together all of the elements that make up a song.
What are two albums you keep very close to hand?
Einstein: ‘Sneaking Sally Through The Alley’ by Robert Palmer and ‘Endless Flight’ by Leo Sayer
Andy: James Brown's ‘Black Caesar’ and Funkadelic's ‘Tales Of Kid Funkadelic’
The road to musical success is often long and hard. What is one lesson you have learned along the way that changed the way you saw things?
Einstein: You have to be willing to give up some of yourself for the sake of benefiting others
Andy: I need to please the audience and I shouldn't expect them to please me.
Who inspires you? (both in life and in music)
Einstein: Exotica music king ‘Les Baxter’
Andy: Saint Paul (talk about effective touring and promoting)
What is a quirky fact about yourself no one else knows?
Einstein: my little toenail is thick and harder than a rock
Andy: I'm desperately attracted to women who loathe me
If you could have two wishes come true what would they be?
Einstein: Becoming handsome and getting a date
Andy: I would play drums in a top-notch, funk, cover-band and Einstein's answer to this questions wouldn't be so uncomfortably lame
Before you step on stage for a gig, what do you do to prepare?
Einstein: go through my records to put my set in order and do some vigorous stretching
Andy: Hang out with the other guy in the band (dizzy) pretending to be friendly but secretly making sure he isn't overindulging in drink and smoke.
What do your parents think of what you do? Have you ever taken them along to a gig?
Einstein: They're supportive but they don't go to shows.
Andy: My mom is very nice but my dad is always making little wise-cracks. One time, he told me that he was waiting in line at an airport when he heard 2 guys talking enthusiastically about our group. I thought he was giving me some credit but then he followed up the story by saying, "WHAT ARE THE ODDS OF THAT??!!"
If you could be remembered for one thing, what would it be?
Einstein: Creating timeless music
Andy: Einstein said it; there's really no other goal.
Having spent so much time on aeroplanes, are you an official member of the mile high club?
Einstein: Not yet
Andy: No, but stocky, middle-aged flight attendants with their hair pulled back excruciatingly tight really get my mind racing.
Coming up: We just put out an album called ‘audacity’ and we'll be in Australia for some big shows around the New Year 2010 |
