Beat Broker gets into the brain of legendary DJ and producer, DJ Katch

Tell us about the first time you were really inspired by music?
I was really inspired by the music when I saw Beat Street. They had the scene of Kenny aka Double K making music in his room on the turntables, doing mega mixes and making beats. I was already a break-dancer and that’s why I went to see Beat Street, but seeing the house parties and stuff I was like ‘oh shit I wanna do that.’

What do you consider to be your greatest skill?
Being able to make people dance.

Name two albums you keep very close to hand.
London Funk Allstars - Flesh Eating Disco Zombies vs Bionic Hookers from Mars.
Bob Marley- Legend.

The road to musical success is often long and hard. What is one lesson you have learnt along the way that changed the way you saw things?
Don’t get caught up in the hype and keep ya head together. I’ve seen many people come and go because of it.

Who inspires you? (Both in life and in music)
That’s a hard one as it has changed over many years, but the freedom fighters like Bob Marley to Tupac as they did so much work and they moved masses of people with their music.
Also KRS ONE, Marley Marl and the Juice Crew, Public Enemy, Russel Simmons, Run DMC, James Brown, Afrika Bambatta, Dr Dre, Malcom X and Ghandi.

Tell us a quirky fact about yourself no one else knows!
I am right handed but I kick with my left foot

If you could have two wishes come true what would they be?
To be debt free and another two wishes

Before you step on stage for a gig, what do you do to prepare?
For Resin Dogs I go through the set list then try to run through the set in my mind and with the drummer, but with djing I usually go to the venue a bit early to pick up the vibe.

What do your parents think of what you do? Have you ever taken them along to a gig?
Now that they have seen me on the TV they think it’s awesome. They have never been to a show as we usually play too late, but when I’m staying at their place and coming home from work they are usually up when I come in.

If you could be remembered for one thing, what would it be?
That we broke a lot for Australian hip hop as a band as there weren’t too many before us that I can recall.

Having spent so much time on aeroplanes, are you an official member of the mile high club?
I hear that’s been changed to Frequent Fuckers club and no.
