a broken silence
A Broken Silence
Beat Broker catches up with Torcha from A Broken Silence for a quick chat over a sip or two of a top shelf beverage.

Torcha of Hyjak n Torcha and of course A Broken Silence gives us 5 minutes of his time and strangely enough doesn't seem to remember if he's a member of the mile high club...

Tell us about the first time you were really inspired by music?

Seeing Public Enemy perform live when I was 13 was the craziest thing I’ve ever seen. Their energy on stage was nuts.

What do you consider to be your greatest skill?
Hopefully music.

Name two albums you keep very close to hand.
KRS-One ‘Sex & Violence’ and Goodie Mob ‘Soul Food’

The road to musical success is often long and hard. What is one lesson you have learnt along the way that changed the way you saw things?
To be a success at music these days you have to learn a lot about the business side of things, which is something many muso’s, myself included, do not enjoy. I’ve seen heaps of really talented people give up over the years without having a proper crack at making it.

Who inspires you? (both in life and in music)
Jay Z for his work ethic & longevity, and Mandela for his dedication & sacrifice for justice.

Tell us a quirky fact about yourself no one else knows!
I like classical music.

If you could have two wishes come true what would they be?
I wish I could bring Pun back...and World peace would good too

Before you step on stage for a gig, what do you do to prepare?
Warm up the voice and scope a strategic spot to put my drink of choice on stage.

What do your parents think of what you do? Have you ever taken them along to a gig?
They say like it to be nice, I’d say. Only once have they come to one of my gigs, but that was at the opera house playing with The Whitlams and the Sydney Symphony Orchestra, so it doesn’t really count as one of our gigs.

If you could be remembered for one thing, what would it be?

My skills on the BBQ.

Having spent so much time on aeroplanes, are you an official member of the mile high club?

Not that I can remember.
